After over a decade of busy ministry, Paul's career was suddenly brought to a screeching halt. He was arrested by the religious leaders and transferred to the Roman authority.
On the surface, Paul's immediate task was to seek justice and resume his "normal" life.
On the spiritual level, however, God was about to do something special.
So, how did Paul go through his "in between normals"? What was God trying to teach him?
A Pure Heart
In today's reading, Paul stood in trial before Felix, the Roman procurator of Judea from 52 – 60 A.D.
After the religious leaders laid out their accusations, Paul stood up and defended himself.
Governor, "You can easily verify that ... My accusers did not find me ... they cannot prove to you ... " (24:11-13)
This was not the first time Paul appealed to his integrity. Paul's defence was not made up of twisted words. He was an open book. People could easily cross-check his words and deeds.
A few years ago Paul wrote to his friends in Thessalonica. He said,
"You know we never used flattery, nor did we put on a mask to cover up greed—God is our witness." (1 Thess. 2:5)
For Paul, his character was the foundation of his career, and the last line of his defence.
Keep Your Heart Pure
Now, did Paul's integrity get him out of jail?
Nope! In fact, it's the opposite.
After the religious leaders' scheme, it's now the Governor's turn.
The Governor wanted Paul to give him a "bride." (24:26) (Thanks, autocorrect, I mean "bribe.")
My friend, don't you think that Paul should just spend a little money and get himself out? He could have done a lot more for God if he was out of jail. Right?
Just a little evil to bring about a bigger good. Why not?
Yes. This is called human wisdom. And this is called corruption.
So, what did Paul do?
Paul refused. And he paid the price.
He was kept in Caesarea for 2 years! Two years! That means, he was tempted to give in every single day for those 2 years!
My friend, the truth is, a pure heart yesterday doesn't guarantee a pure heart today!
A Pure Heart Indeed
God had a bigger and heavier assignment waiting for Paul. But God had to reveal the true condition of Paul's heart before He could entrust him with such responsibility.
I suspect Paul would be meditating on Psalm 24 a lot during those 2 years.
"Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart, ..."
Paul kept his heart pure. If not, the Book of Acts would probably stop here. The test had revealed Paul's character and strength. Now, God was ready to make another move.
My friend, keep your heart pure. This is how we journey through the land of "in between normals."

What do you think would happen if Paul chose to compromise? What would that say about Paul? How would that affect his future career? What are your own challenges to keep your heart pure?
Prayer for Today:
Father God,
The message for today is challenging and counter-cultural. We live in a world that values power and expediency over integrity. But Father God, thank you for reminding me that my character will determine my future. It's not going to be easy, but I choose to follow your word. Please give me strength when I choose to make decisions that honours you. Please take away my "fear of man." Instead, please help me put my trust in you.
